October 13th is National Train Your Brain Day. It’s a day that we devote to challenging and expanding our minds through mind exercises and puzzles. Taking time out to explore and increase the potential and capacity of your mind is never a bad practice. Here are some activities you can do to help increase your cognitive skills:
- Read (yeah, it’s really that simple)
- Use your non-dominant hand
- Learn a new word
- Play a matching game
- Solving brain teasers
- Do a crossword puzzle
- Get more sleep (definitely on my to-do list)
And while I’m all for working out the brain to keep mentally fit, as a life coach I think that it is equally important to cultivate a positive mindset as part of your mental self-care. Your mindset is a set of beliefs that have a huge impact on how you think, feel, and act. The mindset that you adopt is one of the determining factors in your successes and failures in life.
There are two basics types of mindsets: fixed and growth. A fixed mindset believes that your abilities are fixed and can’t be changed, therefore you don’t need to exert any effort (ex: “That’s the way I am and I can’t change”). A growth mindset believes that abilities can improve and change with effort (“I can learn to be a better listener”).
Training your brain to adopt a growth mindset will not only help you succeed in life but it will also help you cope when faced with challenges. You are more apt to seek out solutions instead of focusing on the problem and embrace change instead of fear it.
So in the spirit of #NationalTrainYourBrainDay,I have gathered 15 mindset quotes to help you on your growth journey. Comment below and let me know which is your favorite or that resonates with you most.
